The Fresno Center and AT&T
Empower Students with Back-to-School Support
August 25, 2025
On Friday, August 22, 2025, The Fresno Center, in partnership with AT&T and local community organizations, hosted a powerful back-to-school event designed to empower students and families. Hundreds of free laptops, backpacks, and essential school supplies were distributed to pre-selected K–16 students, ensuring they start the new school year with confidence and opportunity.
The event was part of AT&T’s California Summer of Connectivity, a statewide initiative that delivers digital resources directly to communities in need. This effort builds on AT&T’s nationwide campaign to bridge the digital divide, with a $5 billion commitment to help 25 million people connect to high-speed internet by 2030. Since 2021, AT&T has distributed more than 30,000 laptops to students and families across California.
Honoring Partners in Education and Mentorship
At the event, Fort Miller Middle School, Webster Elementary School, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California were recognized for their outstanding contributions to youth development and mentorship. Nearly 20 community agencies also participated in a resource fair, offering services and information to over 250 attendees.
Leaders Coming Together
The day’s activities included a press conference, community fair, and laptop distribution, with strong support from community leaders and elected officials. Those in attendance included:
Pao Yang, President & CEO, The Fresno Center
Jim Costa, Congressman, 21st District, U.S. House of Representatives
Luis Chavez, Supervisor, County of Fresno
Nelson Esparza, Councilmember, City of Fresno, District 7
Aubrie Tone, Manager, External Affairs, AT&T
Macy Masumoto and Valerie Davis, FCOE and FUSD Trustees
Interviews with parents and students highlighted the life-changing impact of receiving a new laptop or backpack. For many families, this event lifted barriers to learning and participation in an increasingly digital world.
Why It Matters
The digital divide remains a significant challenge. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, 41% of low-income households in the state still lack full digital access, including both internet service and connected devices. By addressing this gap, events like this provide more than supplies—they create opportunities.
