100 Years of Black History Commemorations

March 5, 2026

The Holistic Wellness Program at The Fresno Center recently hosted a Cross-Cultural Workshop in honor of Black History Month 1926–2026, embracing this year’s theme: “100 Years of Black History Commemorations.”

Black History Month began in 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson launched “Negro History Week” to recognize the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. A century later, we continue that commitment — not just in February, but year-round.

We were honored to welcome Arvelia “Vee” Cooper, a Black activist and community advocate, who shared powerful reflections on the history of enslaved people and the resilience carried forward by their descendants. Her message highlighted how understanding historical struggles and strength can support healing, identity, and mental wellness today.

Workshops like this create space for education, dialogue, and cross-cultural understanding, reminding us that honoring Black history is an ongoing commitment to equity, awareness, and community well-being.
