Inside the Multicultural Back to School Wellness Camp
August 14, 2026
As summer comes to a close, preparing children to head back to the classroom takes more than just buying backpack supplies—it takes nurturing their emotional, mental, and cultural well-being.
This year, 35 local children came together for a vibrant day of connection, learning, and joy at the Multicultural Back to School Wellness Camp. Operated by The Fresno Center under the Holistic Wellness Program funded by the Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health. The event proved to be a resounding success, equipping youth with confidence and wellness tools just in time for the new school year.
Bridge-Building Through Cultural Education
The camp kicked off with a powerful exercise in unity. Youth participants met with Cultural Brokers—trusted community advocates who bridge linguistic and cultural gaps for local families.
The children explored diverse traditions and practiced cross-cultural connection by learning how to greet one another in five distinct languages:
English ("Hello")
Spanish ("Hola")
Hmong ("Nyob zoo")
Khmer ("Choum Reap Sur")
Arabic ("Marhaban")
Through a lively Cultural Show and Tell, campers shared their backgrounds and celebrated the rich diversity that makes the Fresno community so special.
Mindful Minds & Creative Hands: Camp Highlights
Throughout the day, the youth engaged in hands-on activities designed to promote mindfulness, emotional expression, and physical play:
Healing Arts & Crafts & Jewelry-Making: Expressive outlets where children created personalized keepsakes while building fine motor and social skills.
Guided Meditation in Nature: Quiet, grounded moments outdoors that taught youth how to manage stress, practice breathing exercises, and find calm before school routines begin.
Breakdancing: High-energy movement sessions that brought out big smiles, confidence, and a fun outlet for self-expression.
Why Holistic Youth Wellness Matters
Programs like the Multicultural Back to School Wellness Camp reflect a growing recognition that mental health and cultural identity go hand-in-hand. By providing culturally responsive care early on, the Holistic Wellness Program helps youth build resilience, reduce anxiety, and feel a sense of belonging both in the community and in the classroom.
