Juneteenth Stepping: “Where Them Boots Come From” – A Celebration of History, Movement, and Freedom

On June 17th, our community came together for a powerful and rhythmic celebration of culture, freedom, and heritage at our Cross Cultural Workshop: Juneteenth Stepping – “Where Them Boots Come From.” This event offered attendees an opportunity to learn about the deep roots of stepping and movement traditions tied to African American history.

Led by the vibrant and inspiring Kelley Nayo-Jahi, the workshop was more than just a dance class—it was a moving history lesson. Kelley shared her passion and knowledge of African dance, modern jazz, and stepping, connecting the art form to its origins in African American fraternities, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and community celebrations. Through dance, she brought to life the rhythm, resilience, and cultural pride that define the Juneteenth holiday.

Following the workshop, participants enjoyed a lively line dance session, filling the room with joy, unity, and movement. The energy was infectious and celebratory, highlighting the importance of cultural expression in honoring Black history.

Afterward, our team took the Juneteenth spirit around The Fresno Center—capturing smiles, vibrant photos, and shared moments that reflected the heart of this important day.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is a powerful reminder of delayed justice and the enduring struggle for Black freedom in the United States.

More than a date, Juneteenth is a celebration of African American culture, achievement, and resilience. It encourages us to reflect on our collective history, honor the past, and continue working toward equity and justice for all.

We extend our thanks to Kelley Nayo-Jahi for her storytelling and spirit, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating Juneteenth through dance, learning, and community.
